The Institute of Byzantine Musicology was established by the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece during its 87th session on June 24, 1970, following a proposal submitted by the late Metropolitan Dionysios of Servia and Kozani to the Standing Synodal Committee on Divine Worship and Art. It operates in accordance with Regulation 17/1981 of the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece (*Ecclesia*, Year 57, Issue II, No. 3/16.9.1981) and Government Gazette (FEK) 135, Issue I, 10.11.1982.

Grigorios Th. Stathis, Professor Emeritus of the University of Athens, served as the Institute's first research associate (1970) and subsequently, from 1999 to 2022, as its Director and editor of its publication series. In 2022, the Holy Synod awarded him the title of Honorary Director of the Institute during a special ceremony.

Since 2022, the Foundation has been directed by Grigorios Anastasiou, Associate Professor at the Department of Music Studies of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) and protopsaltes.

Polykarpos Tympas, a musicologist, PhD candidate at the NKUA Department of Music Studies, and Protopsaltes, serves as a Research Associate of the Foundation.
