The purpose of the Institute of Byzantine Musicology (IBM) is to promote research on the relevant topics of the science of Byzantine Musicology in Greece and to develop this research at an international level.

More specifically, the basic objectives of the IBM include:

a) Monitoring the activities of scientific research or efforts to meet practical needs, carried out by various individuals or by Organizations (i.e. Conservatories, Schools of Byzantine Music, Associations of Chanters or Friends of Byzantine Music) in Greece and directing all these activities towards an approach to historical accuracy and a uniform presentation of the music used in Orthodox Christian worship.

b) Monitoring the developments and directions of international Byzantine Musicology and studying of the findings of the all research to date with the aim of accepting or refuting and restoring the erroneous positions that have been formulated from time to time.

c) The systematic musicological study at a higher scientific level of all the problems of Byzantine Music, examining it, on the one hand, as a medium in Orthodox worship and on the other hand, more broadly, as an art among the Fine Arts.

d) The preparation and publication of relevant works that fall into the following series:

1. A Scientific Journal published twice or at least once a year.

2. General Works, namely Manuscript Catalogs, Catalog of Composers and their Work, "Kleida" and Glossary of Old Notation.

3. Musicological Studies referring to the history, notation, morphology and other topics or problems of Byzantine Musicology.

4. Works of Byzantine Music, namely the edition of "All the Major Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Composers" with the analytical notation of the New Method, based on the explanation of the Three Masters of 1814, and perhaps in parallel transcription in western notation.

5. Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Composers, a series of reference recordings of the most elaborate compositions of the great Byzantine and post-Byzantine composers of the Psaltic Art.
